Iris (Aeola) Lu


Iris (Aeola) Lu A ninth-grade student at Valley View Middle School in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Ms. Lu has been with the afterschool dance program of Asian Media Access (AMA) since 2011. She enjoys school and excels in arts, science and math; serves on the Student Leadership Council; is involved in Environmental Protection and Recycling Works at school; and has an overall 3.6 grade point average. She also likes drawing, K-pop music and dance, and snowboarding. Since 2012, Ms. Lu has been the team captain of AMA’s afterschool dance program, which is part of the 21st CCLC program. This conscientious student strives to do her best and demonstrates a high level of personal responsibility and self-discipline.

Ms. Lu so loves to dance that she continued even after a 2012 injury that required a neck brace. After two years and a full recovery, she led her dance team to third place at the 2014 Hmong New Year Dance Competition, which included 34 local and regional teams. In summer 2014, Ms. Lu led her dance team on trips to China and Korea to showcase the beauty of Asian-American fusion dances and learn new skills from overseas peers. Ms. Lu researched and planned the international exchange, and led the fundraising effort that enabled youth in need make the trip.
